Job description

**Location:** Austin, Texas **Duration:** September 1, 2026 – August 31, 2027 (up to 2,080 hours) **Hours:** Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed) **Overview** A Texas state agency is seeking an AI/ML Engineer to support critical artificial intelligence initiatives. This short-term staff augmentation role will supplement existing capacity and provide specialized expertise to meet accelerated delivery timelines for multiple enterprise-level priorities. The position offers an opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI solutions in a public-sector environment. **Key Responsibilities** - Build and deploy components of the enterprise search tool to improve information retrieval across agency systems - Assist with the configuration, rollout, and documentation of the Darwin AI inventory and monitoring system - Support implementation and testing of AI agents aligned to business unit needs to improve internal efficiency and public-facing services - Develop technical controls, documentation, and processes required for AI governance adoption - Ensure compliance with cybersecurity, privacy, and statewide technology policies **Required Qualifications** - 1+ years of experience building and deploying components of enterprise search tools - 1+ years of experience assisting with the configuration, rollout, and documentation of AI inventory systems - 1+ years of experience supporting implementation and testing of AI agents aligned to business unit needs - 1+ years of experience developing technical controls, documentation, and processes required for AI governance adoption - Ability to pass a comprehensive background check (felony convictions, certain misdemeanors, DWI convictions within 5 years, active warrants, and other disqualifiers apply) **Work Location & Requirements** - Hybrid work arrangement with on-site and telework options - Primary work location in Austin, Texas - Normal business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, excluding state holidays - May be required to work outside normal business hours on weekends, evenings, and holidays as requested - All travel, per diem, parking, and living expenses are at the candidate's expense unless pre-approved in writing - Must be authorized to work with the State of Texas and pass background screening
