Job description

**Location:** Austin, Texas **Duration:** September 1, 2026 – August 31, 2027 (up to 454 hours; renewable for up to three one-year optional renewals) **Hours:** Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (excluding state holidays); occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed **Interview Mode:** In person **Overview** A Texas state agency seeks a Senior Database Administrator (Database Administrator III) to perform advanced database administration tasks for applications with complex data models, workflows, and reports. The successful candidate will work with full-stack Java applications on a cloud platform (Azure/AWS) within an Agile (Scrum) environment. The role involves migrating data from Oracle applications to SQL schemas, optimizing database performance during and after migration, identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks, and implementing monitoring solutions to track database health and performance metrics. The DBA III will work closely with the team to create and maintain logical and physical data models, with a primary focus on Oracle and Azure Microsoft SQL, including converting Oracle Stored Procedures and Functions to Azure SQL. **Key Responsibilities** - Perform advanced database administration tasks for databases used by applications with complex data models, workflows, and reports - Migrate data from Oracle applications to SQL schemas and load it into collections - Optimize database performance during and after migration; identify and resolve performance bottlenecks - Implement monitoring solutions to track database health and performance metrics - Create and maintain logical and physical data models; design relational database models - Convert Oracle Stored Procedures and Functions to Azure SQL - Perform database tuning, indexing, customization, transformation, and data migrations/conversions - Manage installations, troubleshooting, upgrades, patching, user management, and security of data at rest and in motion - Implement disaster recovery, clustering for high availability and load balancing, data backup, purging, and archiving - Implement database policies; perform data replication and backup to secondary sites like disaster recovery environments - Ensure procedures for the integrity, availability, and confidentiality of sensitive and business-critical databases - Monitor database performance and recommend efficiency improvements - Create test database environments for applications, including necessary libraries and procedures - Execute procedures to save, retrieve, and recover databases from hardware and software failures - Ensure user interfaces for database administration and data input/output are compliant with accessibility standards - Provide support to users when accessibility issues arise - Direct programmers and analysts to make changes to database management systems - Evaluate users' requests for new data elements and systems; incorporate them into the existing shared data environment - Coordinate the use of data to ensure data integrity and control redundancy - Maintain data dictionary ensuring uniformity of definitions and set standards for use - Assist with determining, implementing, and enhancing standards on database security - Assist with monitoring disaster recovery procedures and systems **Required Qualifications** - 10+ years of database experience - 8+ years of experience with Oracle, Microsoft SQL (or similar) - 8+ years of experience with Relational Database Administration (SQL Server or Oracle, for example) - 8+ years of experience in database design, analysis, and performance tuning - 8+ years of experience in database structures, data analysis, and performance tuning - 8+ years of experience designing enterprise applications and/or services - 8+ years of experience creating technical and functional design documentation - 8+ years of experience within software development life cycle using Agile methodology (Scrum, for example) - 8+ years of experience with multi-tier system/application development (SOA, Microservices, 3-Tier applications, for example) **Preferred Qualifications** - 8+ years of experience with large volume databases, high availability, and disaster recovery infrastructure - 6+ years of experience with Azure - 6+ years of ability to extract, transform, and load (ETL) data from various sources into Azure SQL - 3+ years of experience in DevOps technology including CI/CD pipeline and build and deployment tools such as Git - 3+ years of experience in Java/J2EE Enterprise Development - Azure certification - DBA Associate certifications **Work Location & Requirements** - Hybrid position: 3 days remote with 2 days (Monday & Friday) required onsite - Candidates must be local to the Austin area (within 50-mile radius) and already reside in Texas - Subject to pre-employment security review to determine employment eligibility - Must sign an Acceptable Use Agreement as a condition of employment - Must sign and return an Information Technology Staff Augmentation Contractor Integrity Agreement before a purchase order is issued - Must sign and return an Information Security Cybersecurity Training Acknowledgement before a purchase order is issued - Vendor must conduct a criminal history investigation of the worker and provide results prior to the issuance of any purchase order - All travel, per diem, parking, and/or living expenses are at the candidate's and/or vendor's expense - May be required to work remotely up to 100 percent of the time at agency discretion - May be required to work outside normal business hours on weekends, evenings, and holidays as requested
